Good speech. Very good. But he whitewashed (no pun) the Rev. Wright's sermon (and character) in not addressing the preacher's most inflammatory words: "God damn America." Watching Wright's sermon reminded me of newsreels of Hitler's stirring speeches -- his inciting hatred of Jews, Wright's inciting hatred of whites.
I know, of course, that Obama is not the Rev. Wright, just as I know that Obama is not Mrs. Obama, whose public comments have been tinged with the same anti-American, racist sentiment as Mr. Wright's. I remain incredulous that a women of her education, an education she surely obtained with lots of public assistance and financial aid, could say only recently, on the campaign trail, that "for the first time" in her life she was proud to be an American. One would think that anybody too poor to pay their own way to college might have felt some gratitude and national pride upon receiving degrees from two of America's most prestigious schools, Princeton and Harvard Law.
Her ungrateful and ungracious statements combined with Mr. Wright's serve notice to many of us that birds of a feather flock together.
Is it cherry-picking to single out statements for condemnation? I think not. History is replete with memorialized statements, some inspiring, some fatal. What utterance do we know of Marie Antoinette except "Let them eat cake"? And Mr. Obama himself thinks so. One of his more memorable statements on the campaign trail was (in reply to Hiliary): "Words matter."
